What is metaverse and how can you take advantage of it?

Can you imagine being able to dance in a virtual concert? Have a drink with friends who live on the other side of the world? And fight monsters? What about visiting monuments from the Middle Ages?

No, I haven’t gone crazy and I’m not talking about science fiction or a Sims game. I’m talking about the Metaverse, that technology that is going to radically change the way we interact.

And, since Mark Zuckerberg made public that it would be the new name of his entire conglomerate of companies, it is on everyone’s lips. But do you really know what the Metaverse is? Do you know how it works? In this article, we analyze EVERYTHING about this technological universe and give you some clues on how you can take advantage of it. Take paper and pen (okay, in the XXI century you probably do it through your computer or smartphone) and we start!

What is the Metaverse?

Let’s go in parts, to understand well what the Metaverse is, the first thing we have to analyze is its meaning:

  • Goal: which comes from the Greek and means “after”, or “beyond”.
  • Verse: which refers to the universe.

Therefore, when we talk about Metaverse we refer to that parallel universe, that virtual world to which we can connect using certain devices. An immersive experience so incredible that it will really be difficult for you to differentiate from the real world when interacting with all its elements.

The Metaverse is a parallel universe, a virtual world to which we can connect using certain devices.

And, although it seems unbelievable, this is not magic art, but uses advanced technologies that we will explain in more depth later. Read!

The origin of the Metaverse

You may not have heard of the Metaverse until Zuckerberg decided to change Facebook’s name to Meta. It is not a new concept but has already existed for decades. How do you hear it!

The concept of Metaverse was really popularized in the wake of neal Stephenson’s novel Snow Crash. In 1992!

It seems as if the science fiction world that Stephenson devised had become a reality, because he proposed the Metaverse as that virtual world with its own rules and where users were able to change their image.

It was undoubtedly a great inspiration for other works of science fiction such as Matrix or Ready Player One. In the same way, the famous video game Fornite was a pioneer in exploiting the possibilities that this interaction between people and technology gives us by organizing virtual events to which people from all over the globe connected.

And yes, perhaps today’s technology has not yet reached these levels of realism that were proposed, but little by little we are getting closer with devices such as VR glasses, which create really amazing immersive experiences.

How does the Metaverse work?

Nowadays we are more than used to being able to connect and interact without limits of space or time through our smartphones, tablets and computers.

Well, what the Metaverse proposes is not far removed from this current reality. What it seeks is to break with the screens and offer a truly immersive experience in which an avatar represents us. In this way, we would move and interact with objects, people and the environment itself.

To understand how the Metaverse works, let’s analyze some of its main characteristics.

Interactivity

In the Metaverse we can establish interactions with both users (or rather their avatars), and influence them. That is, there is a causality because they are totally participants in the changes around them.

A corporeal environment

In this sense, virtual environments follow the laws of physics. Avatars also have a physical appearance and users could choose aesthetics.

Persistence

It is a parallel world that does not stop. Even if the user disconnects, it does not stop but is constantly evolving. We could practically say that it is a totally autonomous living organism that does not depend on users to continue functioning.

A multi-platform reality

The Metaverse is completely decentralized. That is, it does not depend on a single company or a single platform. This is possible thanks to Blockchain technology, which guarantees the security of Metaverse transactions.

The possible functionalities of the Metaverse

To say all that can be done with the Metaverse today is mere speculation. After all, it is still in the development phase and, although companies like Meta (the previous Facebook) are beginning to create the necessary infrastructures, we cannot know for sure what functionalities the Metaverse will offer us. But, put to speculate, let’s do it right:

1. Working with the Metaverse

In the work environment, the Metaverse will allow us to:

  • Develop our own businesses in it. Can you imagine attending class? We already dreamed of it… Walking through their campuses, having our own desk, having coffee breaks with our classmates…
  • Virtual meetings: in which members connect from their homes even if they are still in their pajamas because what the rest will see will be their avatars.

2. Have fun with the Metaverse

The leisure opportunities that the Metaverse can offer are practically endless:

  • Attend concerts.
  • Compete in video games.
  • Interact with people who are far away.
  • Visit museums, buildings…

3. The Economy of the Metaverse

The Metaverse can have its own economy, its own virtual currency. And that would allow us to do things like:

  • Buy online in a much more real way: the avatar could try on clothes and interact with the seller.
  • Make micropayments: within the Metaverse itself, paying to change the avatar’s clothes, to use certain materials within this virtual world, or to attend certain events. Who knows?

Which companies are beginning to take advantage of the Metaverse? 6 Examples

Meta isn’t the only company already starting to prepare for the internet revolution. Other companies are also investing in infrastructure, applications and tools that make room for them in this virtual world. Companies such as Microsoft, Google, Apple or Epic Games. Let’s look at some examples:

1. Nike

The multinational presented Nikeland, its own 3D virtual world located on the Rolbox video game platform. In this universe, the sports brand invites us to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle, totally faithful to its values. It is an immersive experience where the boundaries between the physical and the virtual are confusing. Undoubtedly a real prelude to everything it will offer us when the Metaverse is a reality.

2. BMW

The BMW car brand, hand in hand with NVIDIA, presented an impressive replica identical to one of the factories that combined virtual reality, robotics, and artificial intelligence and then transferred it to the real world. Will these be the factories of the future?

3. Metaverse Property

This company sells plots in the Metaverses that are already created and also manages their rental and care. It is the first virtual real estate in the world! A gateway to the Metaverse. Would you invest in a property?

4. Burger King

The fast food chain announced its inclusion in the NFT world, assets that allow buying and selling the ownership of digital items, with its new token of the new virtual ecosystem, so whopper lovers can enjoy them in the Metaverse.

It is part of the campaign called “Keep it Real Meals” that seeks to eliminate 120 artificial ingredients from its menus.

Thus, users who place their orders will receive a QR code to get a game piece and, when you have three, you will get a quarter token as a prize.

5. Carrefour

Carrefour has not wanted to be left behind either. In this case, it has created its space in the video game with an ecological supermarket with which players could recover lives through healthy food. In this way, they seek to raise awareness among young people about the importance of maintaining a healthy diet in what looks like a futuristic branch of Carrefour.

6. Gucci

The luxury brand has not been able to resist and has also invested in a space on the digital platform The Sandbox to create immersive experiences for its customers. In this case, it offers NFTs of clothing and accessories.

When will the Metaverse be a reality?

Although we are approaching, we still do not have the necessary technologies to make the Metaverse a reality. The virtual reality devices we have today do not make us able to move as realistically as if we were within a parallel universe.

So there is no choice but to wait to see how the devices that make it possible for us to connect to the Metaverse and that, in addition, are affordable to the majority of the population, not only to the great fortunes.

As we have said, Meta is already making large investments to make it possible. Do you think other companies will join?

Undoubtedly, we are at the gates of the new generation of the internet. Just as Web 1.0 was based on hypertext and Web 2.0 on the interaction offered by social networks, without a doubt Web 3.0 is based on the creation and exchange of digital assets. Isn’t it really exciting? What other uses do you think we will give to the Metaverse when it is real?
